“What are you doing? You’re not working tonight are you?” Cody asks.

“Naw, I’m just out shopping for dinner fixins. You?” Jack comes lumbering towards us after waiting for a few cars to pass.

“I’m headed to the Green Dragon, getting a few drinks with some friends. You should join us!”

“Oh, I’d love too, but we already have plans. And Baxter needs to go outside soon.” Although it really does sound like a lot of fun, Jack has little patience for bars—or drunk people.

“I don’t buy it, but shoot yourself. See you tomorrow night.” Cody waves and starts walking away whistling to his own little tune.

“So, who was that guy?” Jack asks.

I almost roll my eyes, or maybe I do, it’s hard to say. “That’s Cody, from work. He’s one of the other bartenders—the funny one I told you about. I bet you’d get along with him.”

“Cody? Is that the guy you got a ride home from the other night, after the trains stopped running?”

“Um.. Probably? He gives me a ride once in a while. Saves cab fare and he lives out in Dorchester any way.”

That wasn’t too horrible, I suppose. Off to Whole Foods we march.
